Plantago lanceolata major is an important medicinal plant with different pharmacological properties including anti-inflammation, analgesic, wound healing, antipyretic, antitussive, anti-infective, anti-hemorrhagic, laxative, astringent, hemostatic activity and diuretic.

The psyllium use for GI conditions such as irritable bowel syndrome (IBS), diarrhea, constipation, and hemorrhoids. It has also been use to treat hyperlipidemia and for its anticancer effects, and it may be useful for glycemic control in patients with type 2 diabetes. Although some clinical data exist to support use of plantago in constipation, respiratory infections, and hyperlipidemia, clinical information regarding other potential uses is lacking.

According to the American Botanical Council, plantain has no know side effects or contraindications. However, some people report experiencing diarrhea and low blood pressure when ingesting plantain.
If you have allergies, such as skin allergies or food allergies (for example, to melon or the vegetable plantain), you may be allergic to plantain, too.
Avoid During Pregnancy
If you are pregnant or breastfeeding, using herbal supplements may not be prudent. There isn’t enough information on herbal supplement safety, and, therefore, it’s probably safer to simply avoid them when pregnant or breastfeeding.
Avoid With Blood Thinners
It’s suggested that people taking the blood thinner Coumadin (warfarin), avoid plantain because it contains vitamin K. When you’re on warfarin or another blood thinner, you need consistent amounts of vitamin K or you risk making your medication less effective.
Dosage of Plantago lanceolata
- Directions:
Adults: 15 drops 2 to 3 times a day, in a little water.
Children (2-12 years): 1 drop per year of age twice daily in a little water. - Do not exceed stated recommend daily dose.
