Description
St John’s Wort Oil
A Vogel St. John’s Wort Oil is created by macerating the fresh yellow flowers of Hypericum perforatum in a carrier oil (like olive or sunflower oil). During this process, the compound hypericin is released, turning the oil a deep, ruby red.
1. Nerve Pain & Neuralgia
This is the most specialized use for St. John’s Wort Oil. It is one of the few topical substances that can penetrate to the nerves.
- Sciatica & Back Pain: Massaging the oil into the lower back can help soothe the inflammation of the sciatic nerve.
- Shooting Pains: It is highly effective for “shooting” or “electric” pains, such as those caused by shingles (post-herpetic neuralgia) or trapped nerves.
- Carpal Tunnel: It helps reduce the swelling and irritation of the nerves in the wrist.
2. Wound Healing & Skin Repair
The oil has powerful antiseptic and “vulnerary” (wound-healing) properties.
- Burns & Sunburn: It is a classic remedy for first-degree burns and sunburns, as it cools the skin and accelerates the regeneration of skin cells.
- Minor Abrasions: It helps prevent infection in small cuts and scrapes while reducing the likelihood of scarring.
- Old Scars: Regular application can help soften old scar tissue and fade redness.
3. Anti-Inflammatory & Muscle Relief
- Bruises & Sprains: It helps the body reabsorb blood from bruises faster and reduces the localized swelling of a sprain.
- Stiff Neck: Massaged into the neck and shoulders, it helps release tension held in the muscles and nerves.
- Arthritis: It can provide temporary relief for inflamed joints, especially when the pain feels “sharp” or “hot.”
4. Viral & Fungal Support
- Cold Sores: Due to its antiviral properties, applying the oil at the first “tingle” of a cold sore can help prevent it from fully developing or speed up the scabbing process.
- Antifungal: It can be used as a secondary support for fungal skin infections, similar to the tea tree oil found in Salcura Antiac.
